Stone and brick paving can be laid either on a concrete base with mortar, or set dry on a gravel base. Setting stone on a gravel base without mortar requires a thicker stone than a mortared application. Dry set stone and brick patios are permeable and will move with the ground if a tree root should heave the paving.
